U.S. College Tour

Harvard University

Sign-up for interim sponsored by The North Broward Preparatory Schools!

COURSE LEADERS: Jeffrey Stohr, Heidi Teplitz, Eric Salomonsson
PRICE: $2,799 plus airfare
DESTINATION: Northeast (Washington, D.C., New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia)
DATES: Febrary 24- March 5
PREREQUISITES OR LIMITATIONS: 10th and 11th grade students
MINIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 30
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 45

What will I do during this course?

We will fly to Washington D.C. and begin a trek to some of the nation's finest colleges, universities and military academies. We will examine the different lifestyles in the region and the many differences between large, medium and small schools in both urban and suburban cities and towns. Our trip will begin in Washington, D.C. and move through Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

What will I learn during this course?

Textbooks will be provided: The Everything College Survival Book and Killing the Spirit by Page Smith

Students will learn an abundance of information on the College Tour: a firm understanding of the college application process as we sit through information sessions at selected colleges and universities; a feel for college life (living on your own, making decisions and taking personal responsibility.) Students will be exposed to the areas surrounding colleges such as points of interest and job opportunities. Campus tours will provide our students with the opportunity to see residence halls, living spaces, dining halls, laundry rooms, libraries, lecture halls and classrooms. Overall, these students will receive a firsthand college life experience, preparing them for the next stage of their lives. We will also look into what is to be expected of college life, with our selected textbook playing a large role.

How will my learning be assessed during the course?

A pre-questionnaire will be given, asking for each student's college expectations and assessing their knowledge of the college application process. A post-questionnaire will be given to the students the day after we return to campus, asking many of the same questions and elaborating on others (the pre-questionnaire will be returned to the students.) Also, each student will select one school on the tour to which they will submit and write a paper comparing predetermined criteria which was established in a meeting prior to interims. Each night of the interim will end with a reflective meeting at which the books will be discussed and students will be asked to share what they learned about the college.
